Varsity basketball players volunteer with kids who have cancer
Humber Hawk plays with a little girl

Thanks to Jim Bialek and Aycha Hamaoui

Saturday was a day of giving for members of the Humber Hawks men’s and women’s basketball teams, as they participated in “Swish for the Cure," a fundraiser for kids with cancer.

Each athlete was paired with a child with cancer for the day, participating together in activities like chocolate making, build-a-bear and storytelling.

A couple of players got into the Hawk costumes for an afternoon carnival -- even participating in a dance off with the Toronto Raptor.

In its first seven years, Swish for the Cure has raised more than $132,000 for the Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation.

For the Hawks, the day was part of the ongoing "Hawks Have Heart" program, which gets varsity athletes involved in a variety of community initiatives.

Andrew Tucker playing for sitting volleyball team
Andrew Tucker plays sitting volleyball.

Three years ago, Andrew Tucker's leg was amputated just below the knee. Complications from lupus shut down his kidneys and led to sepsis.

Tucker, a student in the Sport Management Program and an avid athlete, has never let that stop him. In fact, he is representing Canada at the ParaPan Am Games. The third-year student is playing for Canada's Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team.

Tucker’s play has been strong thus far.

"Our team has performed pretty well early," he says. "Defensively we’re doing a terrific job. We don’t let the ball drop easily, ever. Our team doesn’t get too much exposure to stronger sitting volleyball clubs, so it’s a great experience to play against teams that are in the top ten in the world, especially on home soil.”

He is also enjoying life off the court, having a great time in the Athletes' Village and loving the accommodations. He wasn’t sure what to expect from his first ParaPan Am Games, but has been blown away by everything that has been offered to the athletes.

Tucker plays next against Colombia at 3 p.m. on August 12.

Kelly Nyhof named CCAA Player of the Year for 2013-2014
Photo of Kelly Nyhof, CCAA Player of the Year

For the past five years, Kelly Nyhof has dominated Humber Women’s Volleyball like few, if any, athletes before. Already one of the most decorated Hawks in the school’s illustrious history, Nyhof put an exclamation mark on her stacked resume, named CCAA Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year for 2013-2014.

While her statistics are no doubt some of the most impressive ever compiled, it is her career 106-2 record that best exemplifies just how overwhelming she has been.

It does not do justice to just how great Kelly has been to recite her individual accomplishments, but they are a good start. The list is staggering: three time CCAA All-Canadian, three time OCAA Player of the Year, five time OCAA 1st Team All-Star, five consecutive provincial titles and two scoring titles for the middle position. On their own, these accolades speak to a player who is simply a step above her competition –one who combines her natural gifts with an unrivaled work ethic to make something special.

Laying the foundation for Nyhof was Landis Doyle; the former Humber great helped develop Kelly in her first few years as a Hawk. Doyle took CCAA Player of the Year honors for the 2010-11 season, and was huge in turning the program into what it is today – the seven-time reigning OCAA Champions. One of the special things about the Humber program is its continuity – Head Coach Wayne Wilkins is in his 19th year with the team, and lead Assistant Dean Wylie is in his thirteenth. Much of the credit must go to these two for putting a structure in place for these elite players to succeed on a consistent basis.

Outside of the Humber sphere, Nyhof represented Canada this summer in the FISU World University Games in Russia, cementing her status at the collegiate level, and within the country as a whole. Her drive extends to the classroom as well – Kelly has been an honours student consistently throughout her time at the college, and will complete her time at Humber with two diplomas: one in Social Work, the other in Office Administration.

Kelly’s sits atop or near the top of several OCAA records, including 873 kills (2nd all time), 198 blocks (2nd all time) and 1186 points (2nd all time, 1st all time at Humber). On February 9, 2014 Nyhof became the first Hawk to ever be inducted into the Humber Varsity Hall of Fame and have her number retired while still actively playing. In typical fashion, she came out that day and dominated St. Clair in a crucial match-up.

While her Humber career is coming to a close, it is clear that her volleyball days are not. Having already established herself on the national scene, future appearance representing Canada may very well be on the horizon. Professional play also seems to be a possibility, and with her work ethic Nyhof is sure to continue to make herself better every day. So while her future shines bright, now is a good time to take a moment and appreciate the contributions of one of the greatest Hawks of all time.

Written with Humber Athletics

Humber’s women’s volleyball team hasn’t lost a game since 2011.

And on Sunday, the team set a record by winning its 100th straight match.

"We've said all along that our success is a direct result of the talent we've had come through this program," says Hawks Coach Chris Wilkins.

At the conclusion of Sunday's match, looks of relief could be seen on the faces of Humber's coaching staff.

"It felt great to accomplish," says assistant coach Dean Wylie.  "Now we can put it behind us and focus on defending our provincial title."

Sunday's victory was also the defending OCAA champions’ 86th consecutive regular-season win at the Humber Athletic Centre, a streak that has lasted almost a full decade.

A member of the Humber Hawks women's basketball team made history this week.

Ceejay Nofuente has been named the 2016 National Player of the Year, as announced by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) committee Wednesday evening. The award was presented to her at the annual CCAA All-Canadian Banquet in Windsor.

Since the award's inception in 1978, no player at a current school within the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) has garnered this prestigious honour. This year she has already been named an All-Canadian, OCAA women's basketball player of the year, championship most valuable player and first-team all-star.

Also at the banquet in Windsor, women's basketball head coach Ajay Sharma was named 2016's National Coach of the Year. He is only the sixth Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) coach to claim this honour.

Sharma ranks second all-time in career win percentage across the CCAA. Last season, he took Humber to only their second CCAA final four appearance in program history.

Sharma, Nofuente and the rest of the Humber Hawks will now attempt to become the first women's program from the OCAA to win a national championship. In their quarter-final matchup, Humber will be playing the St. Mary's Lightning today at 3 p.m. The men's basketball team plays their quarter-final game against Camosun College at 4 p.m.

And last week, the women's volleyball team captured bronze in the CCAA championships in Charlottetown, PEI. It was the team's first time winning a CCAA championship medal.

Jill Semple was selected as a First Team Championship All Star and CeeJay Nofuente was the Championship MVP.

Not only is this the first CCAA National title and medal for the team, it is the first national championship win ever by any OCAA women's team in soccer, basketball and volleyball.

Humber completed a perfect season, going 18-0 in regular season play, 3-0 in the OCAA playoffs and 3-0 at nationals.

Play in Alberta on Saturday, the men's basketball team was named the 2016 CCAA silver medallists. Veteran Ancil Martin was the Humber Player of the Game.

Eight Humber College athletes awarded for academic achievements

A record year for the Hawks was capped off when several student-athletes were recognized academically.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association named eight Humber athletes as 2015-16 CCAA Academic All-Canadian award recipients – the most of all the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) schools. It is the CCAA’s most prestigious honour.

To qualify for the award, athletes must earn academic honours, as well as one of the following athletic achievements:

  • Named to their member conference All-Star Team (first or second) in soccer, volleyball, basketball or curling;
  • Earn a gold or silver medal at their member conference badminton championship;
  • Finish among the top seven men or women, as well as finishing in the top third at their member conference cross-country running championship; or
  • Finish among the top three women or top five men, as well as finishing in the top third at their member conference golf championship

Our winners were Ryan Chow (badminton), Phuthita Nilyok (badminton), Sheila McKeen (golf), Michaela DiMarcantonio (golf), Jesse Assing (soccer, badminton), Jaineil Hoilett (soccer), Thalia Hanniman (volleyball) and Alexandra Newman (volleyball).

It’s the cherry on top of an extremely successful season, where Hawks teams brought 23 provincial medals home – and surpassed Seneca in all-time medal count. Nationally, teams won six championships and 11 CCAA medals overall.

The Hawks swept men's and women’s titles in cross country, badminton and basketball, and the men's soccer team won every title available to them.

Ceejay Nofuente (basketball) and Olivia Lei (badminton) were recognized by the college as Female Athletes of the Year. Jesse Assing (soccer, badminton) and Adam Dong (badminton) captured the Male Athlete of the Year titles, while Sonia Nagindas (golf), Phuthita (Boom) Nilyok (badminton) and Jaineil Hoilett (soccer) were each named Freshman Athlete of the Year.
